We often get requests for long underwear patterns, and this sweet pattern from 1887 is just perfect! The pattern is written for a size SMALL usinga sock weight or fingering weight yarn and (modern) size 4 needles. However, if you wish to make it in a larger size the instructions recommend using a heavier weight yarn such as a sport or baby weight yarn and larger needles.

    Price:
    $6.95

In the 1888 pattern for men's long underwear, the yarn used in the pattern was intended for a heavier weight garment. In this pattern, a slightly larger size 5 needle and a sport weight yarn are used to make the drawers. This is intended to be a lighter weight version of the earlier pattern. Also required are small buttons and a length of bias braid to be sewn at the waistband for a place to attach suspenders. The pattern could be modified to use an elastic waist band, but at the time that this pattern was written, the elastic waistband was not to be invented for another 50 years!
